Aperture is Truly “Book Smart”

With a long time reputation for producing some of the best tomes in photography, including the brilliant magazine, Aperture has produced another volume of photographic importance.

PHOTOart compiles a collection of brief introductions to 120 of the most important up and coming artists.
OK, here are the layout highlights: by giving each photographer their images cleanly laid out on a page (nothing in the gutter!) you can get a sense of their work
with bios that are insightful, and straightforward giving you a full background to each artist.
And when there is a larger representational body of work, they give additional pages to the photographs. Each person gets 4 pages. Nice.

The bios are written by the best in the business. The top curators and theorists have contributed to this massive volume.
At 520 pages, it also includes a glossary of photographic terms that are used daily, but never fully explained. Such as limited edition books, editions (artists proofs/exhibition prints). When the terms are defined by these people, it’s another value added feature to the book.

It’s more than reference book. It is a thick and rich look at the current group of up and coming artists. True, some are more established than others, such as Barbara Probst, Luc Delahaye, and Alex Soth.
One of our favorite discoveries from this book is Marco Polloni. See what you think.

And that’s exactly what this book does/is/delivers.
Discoveries.
Aperture has sifted through them all, and presented to you in a nice package, a collection of the new masters.
Each photographer also gets their website listed so you can see a larger body of work, check on the next exhibit, and maybe make a purchase. Wish there was a full list of those on-line so it could just be clicked.
OK, I guess I can type in the 14 letters.

If you ever have the chance to visit Aperture in NYC, make sure you put some time aside.
Not only will you inevitably see a well curated exhibit of photographs, they have an extremely comfortable lounging area where all of their current books are laid out for you to peruse.
Since we love photobooks over here at photoinduced, it was a little bit of a kid in a candy store deal for us.

In case you aren’t sure about who Aperture is, check out this mission statement:
Aperture—the premier not-for-profit arts institution dedicated to advancing fine photography—was founded in 1952 by six profoundly gifted individuals possessed of lofty ideals and high ambition: photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall. With scant resources, these prescient artists created a new periodical, Aperture magazine, to serve the medium, and photography users and fine art lovers worldwide.

For more than fifty years, Aperture magazine has been unrivalled in its excellence and critical acclaim. And, as photography and the medium grew, so too did the Aperture Foundation, expanding to include the subsequent publication of books, limited edition prints and portfolios, traveling exhibitions, and an educational program that includes lectures and panel discussions with artists, curators, and other key players in the field of photography.

With profound respect for the integrity of the viewer’s experience and the artist’s vision, Aperture presents to the public the finest photographic images that are faithful to the artist’s intent and to the truth of the subject. These images are conveyed as intended by the artist, uncompromised by commercial motive, marketplace trends, or external censorship.

In March 2005, Aperture moved into its new headquarters in Chelsea’s art district, at 547 West 27th Street, 4th floor, New York, N.Y. 10001. Our new, 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gallery opened September 8, 2005.

Gallery hours: Tuesday –Saturday, 10:00 a.m. –6:00 p.m. Our general phone number is (212) 505-5555

We support this foundation and encourage all of you to do the same.
And the sale doesn’t hurt either.

Cheers!
