My wife just responded to the \"vernacular\" posting with her thoughts on long-term storage of digital files of pictures for our children and grandchildren.

I just stumbled on an interesting posting on archival storage.

I remember, as a child, finding cigar boxes full of black & white and sepia prints of mostly unkown people. Some of them showed my parents as well. Later, I confronted my parents and they introduced me to a lot of already deceased relatives (uncles, nieces, grand parents etc). Through these pictures as a child I relived m part of my history.

But what will we leave our children? Most pictures now reside on CDs, DVD disks, hard disks, memory sticks. Will our children have the possiblility to access these files on probably outdated technology. Most of these files will carry cryptic names like DSC_0158.jpg, IMG_123.TIFF or some form of raw format, at that time outmoded.

I think that the only pictures of our times that willremain accessible will be those printed on paper or in a book. I strongly fear that all electronically saved pictures will become unaccessible, due to technology becoming outdated.

If we would like to leave a picturesque inheritance to our children we need to continually move the files to the newest carrier and hope that our children will continue taking care of these files and moving them to yet more modern carriers.
