You may have seen the ad on the home page to your right and wondered what was up.

“Douglas Kirkland, host of the 2004 Lucies and inaugural recipient of the 2003 Lucie for Entertainment Photography claims, “The movie industry has its Oscars and now the photography community has its Lucies!”

But actually The Lucies is not only a cool event honoring the greats but they sponsor a competition for the best in the various fields of photography. The winners are published in a beautiful book that the people who will hire you always keep on hand .if you are looking to start a career or enhance a career, this could be the right competition for you.

You are too late for this year but you can get a head start on next years May deadline.

OK, stop laughing.

Lucie Awards Announces the 2006 Honorees at
Rencontres d’Arles Photo Festival, Arles, France

Arles, France (July 07, 2006) – Hossein Farmani, Chairman of the Lucie Awards and President of the International Photography Awards announced the 2006 Lucie Award Honorees in conjunction with the 34th Annual Rencontres D’Arles Festival, in Arles, France July 7th at the Hotel Calendal cocktail party co-organized by the Lucie Awards and the Rencontres d’Arles organization.

The Lucie Awards annual gala ceremony recognizes the achievements of the world’s finest photographers in categories including fashion, advertising, portraiture, fine art, photojournalism, documentary and sports. The Lucies also award a visionary award and a lifetime achievement award.

The 2006 Lucie Award Honorees are:
Willy Ronis – Lifetime Achievement
Sarah Moon – Achievement in Fine Art
David Bailey – Achievement in Fashion
Duane Michals – Achievement in Portraiture
Neil Leifer – Achievement in Sports Photography
Marc Riboud – Achievement in Photojournalism
Roger Mayne – Achievement in Documentary
Eikoh Hosoe – Visionary

Past recipients include the late Gordon Parks, Sebastiao Salgado, James Nacthwey, Bert Stern, Sylvia Plachy, the late Arnold Newman, Jay Maisel, Jim Marshall and Bruce Davidson, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Douglas Kirkland, Steve McCurry, Melvin Sokolsky, Ruth Bernhard, William Claxton, Lucien Clergue, Phil Borges, Annie Leibovitz, Larry Clark, Cornel Capa, Bob Willoughby, Lillian Bassman and many more.
