		<description><![CDATA[I didn&#039;t see all of the PBS piece, but in what I did see, lI didn&#039;t hear  Annie Leibovitz explain why the Penn State marching band was essential in the shot in which it figured.  Right now, I can&#039;t recall what was in the foreground of that shot, either, although it was probably considered by her editors to be the real subject of the picture.

I get the impresssion that Annie Leibovitz is not a philosopher expressing herself through pictures but someone with a sharp eye for pictures who loves to shoot, whatever the subject.  That makes her a very useful player, in that philosophy doesn&#039;t get in the way of meeting her clients&#039; needs.  She just takes whatever she can get hold of and makes a striking image out of it.  The fact that it may be ridiculously overstaged doesn&#039;t faze her all that much because it just means she has more to play with.  And it seems to sell magazines, which is why it&#039;s permitted.]]></description>
