So many things, so little time…3 days is not quite enough

PhotoLA wrapped up today with a number of lectures and a collecting seminar by Mary Virginia Swanson. If you haven’t heard her talks before, log onto her site and check her itinerary . You won’t be disappointed.

As we sift through ALL of the material, imagery, information we saw, studied, ingested, the next few days will be dedicated to bringing you a solid look back. And a good share.

But we’re just getting started. This week we’ll download the whole event. Photographs AND video.

First up let’s go through a couple of the services and books we witnessed. These are some of the tools you need to aid in your photographic life.

From the Gitterman Gallery we found a new friend in Tom Gitterman who was only too happy to share this excellent book for the novice collector.
You know, after going through it, there is lot’s to learn from the more experienced collector also.

“Establishing a well-put-together photography collection is an art in itself, and mastering the technique is as simple as reading—and looking closely at—this lush volume. It’s filled with practical advice on building and curating a collection, along with beautiful photographs by early and contemporary masters that showcase photography’s diverse genres, schools, and movements. Explore different types of collections, including biographical, historical, genre, and thematic. Browse through a plethora of inspiring images—landscapes, portraits, nudes, still lifes, fashion images, photojournalism, and more—each with in-depth analysis to train the mind as well as the eye. ”

Luminous-Lint, a fantastic resource that we are making a solid bookmark for this one.
Listing photographers, exhibitions, galleries, upcoming event and auctions, a fine robust site for the collector, student, researcher.
Alan Griffiths is your host, and a passionate lover of photography and it’s history.

“I am creating this website because I love photography and I feel we can work together to create a high quality resource for all. If you can help out with a biography, some images, anecdotes or anything that helps us better understand the history of photography send me an email.

I hope you enjoy this resource as much as I enjoy bringing it all together.
Alan Griffiths”

I have been attending PhotoLA for all of its 16 years. Always educational, always tempting. An overview of the fine art photographic world in one convenient location.

Thanks to Stephen Cohen and the many dealers from around the country and the world for making this the yearly highlight of photography in Los Angeles.

Cheers!
Damon Webster
