Shussing, Spelunking, Scuba and Motocross: Let’s just take a shower!

Last Jan. at the Consumer Electronics Show, we came upon a bunch of new tools to convert your smartphone into the HD video camera it was always meant to be.
Maybe not always, but recently.
This versatile little rectangle, has been able to get so much goodness jammed up inside it, you think twice about pulling out the real gear.
Yes, my tongue is firmly in my cheek.
Anyway, we did find one of the best overall protective cases, which is not only waterproof, but shockproof, and thin enough to let you control the touchscreen though the clear acrylic cover.
The LifeProof
fits an iPhone 4 and on it’s own, is a solid protective case, impervious to most drops, or spills into the pool.
(You do have to have a special included plug inserted into the earphone socket to get that waterproof-ness)
Lot’s of claims out there, but this item really works.
First, we made sure the seal was watertight buy submerging the closed case under water with a heavy cup on top, for an hour.

The case passed the wet test.
Now onto our usability test.(yes,we talk that way.)

None of the extreme sports but more Hitchcockian filming was on the agenda.
In a small shower, how do you get a waterproof camera with an actor/actresss, in there with some room to move?
We weren’t about to build a set. C’mon, we’re shooting on a budget!
And the GoPro had a bit more distortion than we wanted at the close range.
LifeProof
and iPhone to the set, please.
Using a GoPro adaptor for the case, and a suction cup mount, we set the phone/HD Cam in place.
First of…..can we choose our music while we shower?
YES! with the use of a bluetooth jambox speaker, we could choose our tunes to shower by,with bathroom filling volume. And change our minds at will, when ABBA bored, and it was time for Springsteen.
The soapy fingers floated over the touch screen and changed the tune, like a juke box. Thanks, Lifeproof!

Right, back to the shoot:

By adjusting the HD Camera in the iPhone to shoot the reverse, our talent was able to see what the camera saw.
From the shampoo application to the conditioner massage to the dramatic crescendo.
The iPhone mounted with the LifeProof
case, the GoPro holder and the Suction cup, did the work, as the director intended.
Sorry, the talent would like to wait till it’s given a rating before sharing. It’s a shower scene after all.
Here is the rig, as set, from the side. Tiny space.

We do recco dubbing in the sound later unless, you need that “in situe” water sound as it its the head and body.
So while we are not using the LifeProof
for the extreme sports shooting it may be capable of, we found it to be an incredible tool that solved a shooting problem.
Highly recommended.

And not just recommended:

  1. Caving, not spelunking. Cavers rescue spelunkers.
