Vacation Camera and Printer Review

There were two items we reviewed earlier this year, but It seems appropriate to talk about them again.

One is the Olympus 720 SW, digital camera.

When we first looked at this at a photo trade show in Feb., the stats and features were impressive. At 7.1 meg,and all of the features that have become standard for point and shoots, there was one main feature that stood out for us:

Able to go underwater (ocean or pool) for up to 10 feet, for an HOUR!. Shockproof from a 5 ft drop.
The 28 (?) multiple effect options include underwater. You may know that a lens can distort once underwater. There is a compensating control for this. Plus you can be shooting flash of your favorite fish. Easy digital underwater? We love that!

The whole of the camera is sealed in rubber before the outer casing is put on. We were told that after the hour underwater you should come up for 10 min., repressurize, if in saltwater rinse off, then go back under. And no underwater housing needed! They do offer a housing if you want to go down to depths of 130 Ft.

Downside? Only one and not major- the lensis comparable to a 38-114 mm lens. Like the telephoto end, wish it was wider angle at the other.

This is no doubt the next vacation camera for us. Snorkeling and the beach are always in our plans.

It is a small package that seems like the perfect summer point and shoot.

The other item we discussed was the Epson PictureMate Deluxe Photo Printer

AC or Battery, you can take this easy to use 4×6 printer to whatever backyard barbeque or event you want.

Great prints, that can be as cheap as .21 per , if you buy the paper/ink combo at Amazon.
That is another feature we greatly appreciated. The ink and paper come bundled: you always will have enough ink for your prints.

There is a monitor on the unit that allows you to adjust color, brightness, contrast, cropping, and some minor effects and borders. Work for all of our immediate needs.

Yes we are all posting to the web, but when you’d like a hard copy , or would like to give them out to your friends on the spot, this is the unit.

Talk about your instant grat! It’s not as fast as Polaroid , which we love dearly, but you can do multiple copies of the same image. And still keep the original.

And there is a bonus feature. You can add a Bluetooth adapter and synch your cell phone to it, and finally, easily print out your cell phone pix WIRELESLY! This is big fun at a party, indoors or out. ( remember we said it can take a battery).

So now everyone can leave the party with their favorite shot – even if everyone wants the same one.

Downside? Hmmmm.. none really. It does take about 75 secs. For a print. But the quality is the best.

Just some quick thoughts as the summer rolls out.

Yes we looked, handled and checked that stats of many products before we recco’d these. No , we don’t work for either company.

Many of the point and shoot digitals have certain features that may be better for you and your needs.
You should do a little research online or in your local camera store to make sure you are getting the camera that does what you need it to do. Plus we are here to help advise. We get lots of emails looking for purchase advice.

We can’t wait to see some of your summertime photographs.

Enjoy!
