Apple and the Annenberg: Taking care of me on the road
The 15″ MacBook Pro had traveled the world with me. Photoshop, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, Office, and every plug-in reviewed and used, sat on the hard drive, while working files ran back and forth on the external Tough Duo Raid drive.
Then things started to change. Slow down.
The spinning beachball became an unwanted close friend.
At the last SXSW, returning to the hotel at 2:30AM, images from the night had to be uploaded fast.2 hours later, a sizeble card had been downloaded.
It was time.
Time for USB 3.0, time for a 13″ Macbook pro, time for a large internal hardrive.
Took the plunge, spent the dough. 13″ MacBook Pro

Then was told my 15″ MacBook Pro was vintage, and Apple couldn’t transfer materials. Paid $99. for One-to-One and part of that service is a migration from one laptop to another
VINTAGE??? It still worked/works.
I did the transfer myself. Time machine works.
Transfer done, added some new goodies, and a whole new world opened up.
Not just faster, but much better: USB 3.0 for speed, much faster processor, SD card slot, and Thunderbolt. Hope there are affordable drives coming so we can all take advantage of it.
This new unit could use Airplay, and with the addition of the latest Apple TV, things on the laptop appeared on the hotel room TV.
Yep. Either with wi-fi or hard wire ethernet, you could watch your HULU, NETFLIX, or one of our faves,
Annenberg Space For Photography lectures, on a big screen.
Being on the road, I’ve been missing one of the best things in LA, free photo lectures at the Space.
Now, in the comfort of my room, I could watch,on a sweet flat screen, the media I’ve been missing.
Not staring at the laptop, but enjoying the lectures sitting in a good chair. Or laying down.
These are lectures you are not getting anywhere else from the masters of photography.
I feel for those who can’t get there in person, and while schedules have been limited visits, this is working great.
And yes, perfect for client presentations, although you do need some set-up.
Plus if you prefer to view your work on a big screen, all the tech applies.True the general color setting may make you nuts, but all other work feels nice on the big screen.
The Apple TV is small enough for travel, just make sure you bring an HDMI cable. You can check with any hotel to see if the TV’s have HDMI you can access. These days, many do.
Now that Apple has opened up the box for content providers, other than iTunes, a whole new world of entertainment has opened up.
So over 5 years for use from a laptop; faster, better, stronger new deal, and Apple TV finally makes sense to everyone.
OK, now I’ll try Final Cut X.
Cover me, I’m going in!
NB: Yes, friend asked why not the Retina Display. Money.
To get the same functions and HD space would have been 2.5 times the cost. Yes, a Solid State drive
Heard that 2013 will see 13″ retina displays.
There will always be a newer better one coming.
Just like cameras.

Not sure if you took the plunge for the non-glare screen. When I bought my new 15″ a few years a go, I paid an add’l $200 (in addition to having to buy the top of the line model) for Apple to not put the highly reflective glass on my screen. My laptop is the envy of everyone I know – zero reflections. Totally changed my on the road computing life. Congrats on the new purchase!

If I just get a macbook from Bestbuy does it need fixing and stuff like that or just take it home and just start playin around with it?
If you have Mountain Lion OS and a current Apple TV, with wireless internet, and an HDMI cable going from the Apple TV to the TV, it will work.
You do have to set up the Apple TV for your internet system, as in any wireless product.
